New England Literary Legends

To My Sister Barbara --

Climbing the crooked stairs
of the secret passage
I feel Hawthorne beside me

Salem Custom House
Nathaniel's office
overlooking history

At Walden Pond
time stands still
only the wind blows eternal

Louisa May's desk
nailed before the narrow widow
a writer's shrine

The Fruitlands Commune
bore little fruit
except Louisa's stories

Scholars congregated
Emerson's study --
still true

Legions of giants
corner of Concord graveyard
genius rests in peace
